This mtDNA history has been reconstructed since 1992 with teams of collaborators, and is only one view among several in the field. Inevitably, genetic research and archaeological discoveries will change many of the conclusions presented here, and some details have been knowingly simplified for presentation. To remedy the latter shortcoming, the reader is referred to the literature in this website. Major technical stages in this project involved the systematic detection and elimination of published (and our own) data errors, the development of phylogenetic networks to reconstruct the mtDNA tree, and the refinement of the mtDNA mutation rate as a molecular clock for dating prehistoric events. All these aspects remain part of our research activities. |
